Resource Limited and Low Income Families...

Parent Solutions understands there is a need for every family and realizes that not every family has the same resources and income. We want to help. We do our best to work with you and your family's needs on a sliding scale.

Behaviors...

Often times your child does things that push a button, you feel its deliberate (and it may be) or get you frustrated, you don't know what to do. These behaviors cause disruptions in every day activities like school, chores, and even bed time. These behaviors can include being uncooperative, defiance, running away, tantrums, throwing objects, hitting, drugs, or acting in a way that you may think is not necessary and with help from Parent Solutions, you can help your child eliminate these behaviors. With you, we will design a behavior modification outline in order to reduce and or eliminate unproductive behaviors. With this outline, your child will quickly learn which behaviors are acceptable and which are not. Therefore, you will begin to see more of the responsible and respectful behaviors. Remember, change does not happen over night and you have to be consistent if you want the behaviors to change.

Out of Home Placement / Foster Placement...

Like any other family, Parent Solutions works with the parents of Foster children. Often times children can be angry, defiant, runaway, and difficult to manage during the child's difficult situation. Parent Solutions will help you during difficult times too by providing you with skills to maintain a stable environment for the delicate children of out of home and foster children.

Child Protective Services...

Parent Solutions is designed to be able to work with any family regardless of situation. Often times when children have been removed, parents are required to attend parent education. Parent Solutions works specifically with what would be in the best interest of the family.

The Parent
Once CPS has been involved we understand that it can be awkward  interacting with your child. Some times there is a period of self - doubt about your parenting style. We will help you build the confidence you need to maintain a healthy and abuse free home. Attending a class does not work for all families. There could be mental health issues, medical issues, or other issues such as work that does not allow attendance to class. Parent Solutions meets you where you are, even if its at your lunch hour. We are designed to help you.

Co-Parenting...
Parent Solutions is able to address specific concerns for the child in the home of both parents. Parenting can be conducted during individual sessions; each parent has their own sessions in their home (which would be the scenario should there domestic violence be present) and if possible, the concerns can be addressed during a joint meeting. We believe the child is the most important individual in the family when co-parenting. Our Coaches are able to differentiate between what is a matter that concerns the child and one that should be addressed by other service providers.
Our coaches provide the same approach to behavior modification, structure, consistency, rules, and consequences in order for the child to receive the same message about their behaviors and guidance.
When providing information to the parents, our goal is not to solve their joint issues, but to address individual concerns about their child. We will provide the parents with information on simple and easily duplicated to use as the child's behaviors change and the child gets older.

LGBTQ issues...

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning issues arise in all cultures and all races. Whether you believe your family's issue to be a phase, your fault, someone else's fault, influence from a friend, or even if you have always known, help and support are needed.
Coming out of the closet can be a difficult transition. Many are fearful of family's rejection, society's rejection, changes in life style, and can produce many risks such as low self esteem, self-hatred, suicide, drugs and alcohol use, and prostitution.

Parent Solutions can help with psycho-education, setting rules and structure in the home, and help facilitate a compassionate, culturally sensitive, and
supportive environment for those all who are involved.

Domestic Violence...

If you are experiencing a situation where you are in danger, please call emergency assistance
now.
If you are a survivor of violence and now have a child who doesn't listen to you, is angry all the time, hits you when he/she doesn't get their way, or is defiant and possibly depressed, let us help
you, help them. Coming out of a DV situation leaves you alone and vulnerable to life's demands, especially if you are not used to managing every day situations without fear. Parent Solutions will help you build structure that is easy to follow, non-violent, and provide you with discipline skills to utilize when your child seems unmanageable.

Blended Family/ Step Family...

There are certain approaches to children who come from different mothers or fathers and are all living in the same house hold in a newly arranged family. Everyone wants to be heard, everyone wants time, and most want things the way things used to be when their mother or father were single and they didn't have to share a room with their "new" sibling. This all creates friction and tension and can leave for an unpleasant environment for all who live in the home. Blended families can be very difficult to set boundaries and limits for. Parent Solutions can help you come up with a structure and a fair rule set for all involved. We will help with dividing chores, respect in the home, communication, responsibility, and having fun. Most of all Parent Solutions will be able to provide you with an unbiased perspective through a possible rough beginning to a new family.

Discipline versus Punishment...

To achieve desired behaviors, parents should have a discussion about the way they want to handle children's behaviors. If you are a single parent, you should have someone you trust to discuss discipline in order to be proactive.

Discipline teaches right from wrong and teaches your child how to follow rules. It teaches your child the personal rights of others, what is socially acceptable, and how to respect authority. Discipline allows you to guide your child in the direction of what is wanted. With guidance and discipline, your child will be able to recognize what is right from wrong when they have to make a decision without you. Discipline also teaches your child impulse control and ways to manage every day stressors.

Discipline is stemmed from love and respect for your child.

Discipline is teaching, not punishment

Punishment is when you do something to make your child feel bad about themselves in order to get them to do what you want them to do. This can include making the child feel guilty, calling  them names, isolating them, putting them
down, making them fearful of you to reduce behaviors. Often time you use yelling or physical pain such as spanking, slapping,  burning them, pinching, or pulling hair for example.

Punishment teaches your child that if someone is not listening to your child and if the other person does not do what your child wants, out of frustration and anger that it is ok to use verbal threats, yelling and make someone feel bad about themselves to get their way. It also teaches them that in order to get what they want, they must hit the other person. Punishment creates anger and resentment in your child. It lowers their self esteem and teaches them that its ok to be violent.

Punishment is stemmed from power and control over your child.

Parent Solutions believes there are positive interventions
to
punishment in order to create and obtain desired behavior.

Difficulty in Schools...

Parent
Your child doesn't want to go to school? Your
child's grades are falling? They skip class? You are having to take time away from your daily work routine to answer phone calls about your child's behaviors. If you are, Parent Solutions can help. We can help you create structure of time management for homework, motivating your child, influence the types of friends your child hangs out with, and get your child on a schedule that works for everyone involved.
You can help your child by getting help now.

Teacher

If you are a school who needs a little help with the behaviors of children in your class room or have children who you are in fear that might not advance to the next grade because of behaviors, please do not hesitate to call. We can help you set up some time to observe and provide you with behavior modification skills without having to directly work with the child.

Substance Abuse / Recovery...

Whether it is you or your child, your family needs help. Substance abuse stands in the way of becoming emotionally bonded. Communication deteriorates and the family splits apart. It may not
be in one day or even one month, eventually, anger, resentment, and often times high- risk behaviors occur in children abusing substances or witnessing their parents abuse substances.

If you are the parent and are recently sober, Congratulations!!!  You have taken a great step to become the parent your child needs. Yes we know things are different now, but don't let that stop you. We know that what is standing between you and your child can be guilt, embarrassment,
depression, and fear. It's a Great Time to start being the parent you want to be. Let Parent Solutions help you build your parenting confidence and give you the skills you need to be a healthy parent. We will help you maintain the role of the parent while emotionally bonding with your child.

If you believe your child may be involved with drugs and is abusing alcohol, Parent Solutions will help you identify the signs and help identify the best intervention for you child.

Divorced and Separated Parents...

For some reason, you two aren't together, but there is one thing, you had a child together, and now you are raising your child in separate homes, one parent has visitation, or you suddenly became a single parent. Regardless of the situation, you need to have similar and familiar routines for your child whether in the home, school, or at the other parent's house. Whatever you do, don't talk bad about the other parent to your child, to a friend while your child is around, or to the other parent if there is "nothing nice to say." Remember, children are smarter than you think.
If you are not sure how to respond to your child's comments and behaviors, let Parent Solutions help, based on your specific family's situation.

Consistent Messages...

Increases your child's understanding of what is
expected in the home. Consistent messages provide structure and guidance. Your child is more likely to follow the rules while in your home and out with their friends if they are given consistent messages. It lets your child know that your request or their behavior is not negotiable.

Power struggles and arguing will decrease and with the time that you usually spend disagreeing, you and your family will have time to have fun.

Parent Solutions will show you ways of providing safe and consistent messages by using different methods and approaches.

Moving the Margins...

Training Curriculum for Child Welfare Services with LGBTQ Youth in Out-of-Home Care
is intended to provide training on building the capacity, awareness and skills of social workers and other child welfare practitioners to better serve and respond to the needs of this population of youth.

This curriculum is divided into modules, assuming that trainers will present aspects of the materials to a range of different audiences, with differing levels of understanding, prior knowledge and job responsibilities.

The first half of the curriculum (LGBTQ 101) is designed as an introduction for trainees just beginning their journey toward cultural competency with LGBTQ clients, staff and peers.

The basic LGBTQ 101 is a values clarification training that offers participants the opportunity to explore their personal views and values regarding this population, differentiate between a value or belief and a myth or stereotype and develop strategies to balance personal views and professional responsibilities when the two are in conflict.

The second half of the curriculum (LGBTQ 201) is designed in skill-building modules. Each module explores in greater depth many of the issues LGBTQ clients face in out-of home care systems. These modules include scenarios that can be explored in small group discussions, through role-play and in learning labs.

Parent Project...

The overwhelming majority of parents deeply love and care about their children. Unfortunately, for many high risk families, repeated frustrations and failures combine with
the daily stresses of life often lead to feelings of helplessness. Parents may have given up because they felt success was
unattainable.

The Parent Project is an entirely new parent training model. It not only delivers new skills and insights, it rekindles hope. Parents attending Parent Project classes have the opportunity to experience success at home within the first week.

The Parent Project was developed over a ten year period while working with thousands of high-risk families. It is designed to revive parents desire, teach the skills and provide the practical and emotional support they need to change destructive adolescent behavior. It
directly addresses some of the most serious questions we are asked again and again:

• My child refuses to go to school. How should I respond?
• What can I do when my child beats me up?
• How can I stop my son’s gang involvement?
• My fourteen-year-old is addicted to crack and prostituting to support her habit. How can I get her back?

The Parent Project® offers concrete, no
-
nonsense solutions. The straightforward, step- by-step action plans presented in the curriculum allow parents to take immediate steps toward preventing or intervening in their children’s negative choices.

Family Wellness takes groups of individuals and families and gives them the skills, support, and practice to build on their existing healthy patterns and add new ways of living and working together.

Map for Marriage: Before you say "I Do"

Do you know that approximately 90% of Americans get married at least once during their lifetime? It’s part of the ‘American dream’ for many people. Unfortunately, that dream is shattered for 40% up to as many as 70% of couples, depending on whether they are experiencing their first, second, or third marriage.

The good news is that pre-marital education can reduce the divorce rate by 30 percent (Olson, D.H., Sigg-Olson, A. & Larson, P.J. (2008) The Couple Checkup, p. 6. Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson). Realizing that about 75% of divorced people eventually remarry, pre-marital education is essential for most people in America!

In the Map for Marriage curriculum, you’ll find four specific content areas: Getting Started Together, Two Worlds – One Relationship, Building A Strong Team, and Keeping the Fire Alive. These content areas are further divided into specific topics such as communication skills, commitment, cooperation, family of origin values and beliefs that impact choices, appreciating differences in each other.
The curriculum is an eight-hour series that can be provided in one day, taught in two-hour segments over several weeks, or two half-day classes, depending on the needs of your specific population.

Families Affected by Domestic Violence

Domestic Violence has become too common in our communities. Moving from generation to generation, fueled by increasing social acceptance of violence as part of life, and often used as the one place that some can find power and control, Domestic violence is as dangerous and frightening as the life threatening diseases we fear in our world today.

This curriculum is offered for those who wish to provide families and adults with the skills, concepts and resources to prevent domestic violence. The content is adaptable for a 10 week prevention program from 20 to 30 hours in length.

Finally, we know that there are two prevailing theories around domestic violence. The first is that 75% of the cases of domestic violence will never be stopped and that the victim (usually a woman) needs to be helped to safely get away from the perpetrator. The second is that close to 85% of families with domestic violence stay together and that any support, training, or involvement by outside resources can make it safer at the very least. Because we believe that skills and supports can make a difference we have spent much of our time developing realistic, blue collar skills and courses to help those family members who will come to training rather than lose their families. Realistically, we also provide immediate safety plans for anyone attending our training.

Survival Skills for Healthy Christian Families

The Survival Skills for Healthy Christian Families is a highly interactive curriculum that provides a framework based on a biblical Worldview and Scripture to strengthen Christian families and provide them with skills and practice for living what they believe. The curriculum is flexible and is arranged so that instructors can adapt the full series, individual sessions, or a combination of sessions to specific groups and situations as needed.

The Wellness Way for Stepfamilies

Current estimates are that close to sixty percent of the families in the United States are stepfamilies.

There are wonderful examples in every community of stepfamilies that have worked well and produced skilled and healthy children.  There are also many stepfamilies in every community looking for the path towards health while feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, or disorganized.  The materials in this Handbook are offered as additional resources for Stepfamilies along with the skills to use them effectively. The concepts and skills presented in this Handbook are based on the research of what works for families to be successful and, most specifically, for stepfamilies.

Survival Skills for Healthy Families

The basic: "Survival Skills for Healthy Families" is a twelve hour Family Wellness program presented to large groups of families and individuals in a series of six two-hour sessions:

Parents in Healthy Families
Children in Healthy Families
Adult Relationships-Couples in Healthy Families
As Children Grow-Change in Healthy Families
Solving Family Problems
Sex, Drugs, and You-Passing on Your Values to Your Children

Each session is organized around practical guidelines for healthy family interactions, which are demonstrated and then practiced with the participants. There are over
10,000 trained instructors presenting this course to over 1,000,000 families in the past twenty one years. The course is a proven model for teaching skills, enhancing healthy family interactions, and investing family members in each other and their community.                                               back to top

Other Business...

Our program is designed based on the compilation of programs our coaches have been trained such as Family Wellness, the Parent Project, and Moving the Margins. The designed curriculum captures the fundamentals of parenting classes, behavior modification, and family dynamic theories. Working one-on-one provides the ability to build a relationship and to feel safe enough to share your situation that is needed for your family to allow our Coaches to interact, explore, guide, and assist in areas where you do not recognize change could be utilized.

Resistance to Change...

Often times when families seek a different
approach in attempt to modify behaviors, some or other behaviors may worsen. With consistency and self control, the resistance lessens and your child conforms to the new ways of doing things. Because no two families are the same, some times it takes multiple approaches and attempts to create change. We wont give up if you don't!
